Open to the Public

Regular Board of Education meetings are held monthly at 6:00 PM in the Maple Grove Cafeteria at Maple Grove Jr./Sr. High School, 3980 Dutch Hollow Road, Bemus Point, NY. Public comment is encouraged and welcomed as indicated on the meeting agenda. Each of the seven members of the Bemus Point Central School District Board of Education is elected at large for a three-year term by voters at the District's annual budget vote and an election held on the third Tuesday in May.

Annual Vote - The District's annual election takes place in May. Any resident wishing to vote on the school budget and candidates for the Board of Education must be at least 18 years of age, a U.S. Citizen, and a District resident for 30 days preceding the vote. Voters MUST present ID as proof of residency.

Consider running for the Board of Education - Any individual who has resided in the District for one year can qualify for election to the Board of Education by presenting a nominating petition of no less than 25 names (of qualified District residents) to the District Clerk thirty (30) days prior to the election. Board of Education nominating petitions and absentee ballots are available from the District Clerk, 3980 Dutch Hollow Road, Bemus Point, NY.

Public Participation at Board Meetings

The Bemus Point Board of Education welcomes our community members to attend and/or speak at board meetings. We believe community involvement is an integral part of running a successful school district. The Bemus Point Board of Education understands the importance of ensuring we work collaboratively with all members of our professional learning community to meet our district goals.
The Board will reserve time to hear comments from the audience at the beginning and end of each board meeting agenda. Those wishing to address the board will be asked to give their name and address and, if representing a particular organization, the name of the group. As a courtesy to all wishing to speak, each individual will be granted three minutes to make his or her statement.
Please keep in mind that a Board meeting is a business meeting conducted in, and open to, the public; but it is not a public forum open for discussion or dialogue. This portion of the meeting is not the appropriate forum to discuss personnel (past or present) or individual students. Such concerns must be addressed privately with the Superintendent or appropriate administrator. The Board will listen, but cannot provide immediate feedback or engage in open dialogue, even if it seems like a simple yes or no question. In lieu of speaking during the public comment period, questions can be written on a Board Correspondence Form and submitted to Mrs. Holly Griffith, the District Clerk, or to the Superintendent or Board President before you leave the meeting. The appropriate administrator will respond in a timely manner.
The Board wants these meetings to serve as an example to our students that members of our school board and members of our community can deal with controversial issues in a civil manner and demonstrate mutual respect for one another. In that spirit, the Board requires that all speakers and members of the audience maintain civility and respect for any divergent views that others possess.
